Affiliate Marketing: Could This Be Your Fit?

Affiliate marketing is one of those online business models that sounds wonderfully simple:

Recommend somebody else's product. Someone buys through your link. You earn a commission.

And essentially, that is how it works.

But there's a little more to building an affiliate marketing business than scattering links around the internet and waiting for money to arrive.

You recommend products or services created by another business. The company gives you a unique affiliate link, and when somebody makes a qualifying purchase through that link, you receive a percentage or fixed commission.

You don't create the product yourself. You don't manufacture it, pack it or deliver it.

Your part of the business is helping the right people discover something useful.

This is the bit that's easy to miss.

Affiliate marketing is largely a content and audience business.

You might create:

• Blog posts

• Pinterest content

• YouTube videos

• Emails

• Social media content

Within that useful content, you recommend products or services that genuinely make sense for the person reading or watching.

So if the thought of writing, explaining, demonstrating, reviewing, comparing or sharing useful things appeals to you, that's a point in Affiliate Marketing's favour.

Suppose you created content for absolute beginners learning to start an online business.

You might write:

“The simplest email platform I've found for beginners.”

You explain what it does, who it's suitable for, what you like about it and anything you don't like about it.

If the company has an affiliate programme, you can include your affiliate link.

Someone finds your content, decides the product is right for them and buys through your link.

You earn a commission.

The important bit isn't the link.

It's everything that gave that person a reason to trust the recommendation before they clicked it.

You don't need your own product.

You do need:

Something worthwhile to recommend.

Preferably something you know well enough to recommend responsibly.

An affiliate programme.

The business needs to offer one and accept you into it.

Somewhere to create useful content.

A blog, YouTube, Pinterest, email, social media — there are several possibilities.

People who see that content.

This is the big one. If nobody sees the recommendation, nobody can click the link.

Traffic matters.

You can join 47 affiliate programmes and have 147 beautifully organised affiliate links...

…and earn precisely nothing if nobody sees them. 😂

You also don't control the product, its price, your commission rate or whether the company changes its affiliate programme later.

So this isn't:

Find product → paste link → passive income.

It's much closer to:

Choose audience → create genuinely useful content → attract people → build trust → recommend relevant product → some people buy → earn commission.

You may want to explore it further if you like the idea of:

• creating useful content

• helping people make buying decisions

• recommending rather than creating products

• building an audience over time

• earning without handling stock or fulfilment

You may want to reconsider it if you:

• need income very quickly

• don't want to create content

• hate the idea of marketing or attracting an audience

• want complete control over the thing you're selling

And remember: you're not choosing something forever.
